Some police departments and correctional institutions require criminal justice degrees in addition to on-the-job training. In addition to State and local laws, students learn about criminal behavior patterns and causes, law enforcement technology and procedures, and other security related subjects.

Paralegals, who conduct legal research and help to investigate cases, usually are required to have at least an associate degree. Legal assistants and secretaries, who track and prepare legal paperwork and help to conduct research, often have degrees, too. Courses in legal studies include research and writing methods, witness interviewing, recordkeeping, office and library technology, office procedures and confidentiality, and, of course, law.

Private detectives and investigators held about 52,000 jobs in 2006. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $19,720, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $64,380.
